Concrete Countertop FAQ's

Why concrete countertops over marble or granite? How does concrete compare to these material in cost (per square foot) and texture?

Concrete’s biggest advantage is that it is completely custom. You can have virtually any shape you can imagine. If you have a concrete kitchen or bathroom counter made for you, the cost will be based on the complexity of the form, the mold-making process, and the desired finish, rather than the size. Generally prices start at $65/ square foot.

Does the concrete ever crack?

Yes, hairline cracking may occur. However, this does not affect the structural integrity of the concrete. It can be patched or left visible, thus adding character to the look of the concrete.

Does the concrete stain or is it waterproof?

The concrete must be sealed, making it water and stain resistant. It is best to clean up spills as soon as possible, especially oils and acidic liquids like wine or vinegar. We finish all countertops with a food grade beeswax polish to add an extra layer of protection for spills.

What about color variation?

Color and texture may vary. This is part of the uniqueness of concrete. We use only tested colorant mixtures thus allowing us to offer uniformity of color in our work.

How do I maintain the finish?

Regular maintenance will insure the long life of the concrete. Waxing with beeswax every couple of months will provide a level of protection and add patina to the surface.

Can I put hot pans on the counter?

Yes, but as with sealed marble or granite it is best to use hot pads or a trivet to avoid scorching the sealer.

Can I cut directly on the counter?

No, use a cutting board instead. Knife marks can mar the sealed surface and set up areas for stains to form.
